One of the first decisions you make when planning company headshots is what will the background be?
Below is an example from some company headshots taken at a EY shoot where we photographed the subject on a white backdrop. Following is a shoot taken in front of a window. The purpose of this photo was to profile the partner in an overseas publication so we wanted to showing off the Auckland city.
Although the view was stunning it was not a good representation of Auckland.
Solution – change the background.
I took a photo of the city but from a different angle (in fact from the other side of the city) – then dropped it in behind the subject.
Yes – this is stretching the truth. But the logistics of organising another office on the other side of town plus the time in setting up lights and travel would make the whole exercise far too expensive.
So why are white backdrops so popular?
Consistency. With a window backdrop you will always have the problem of matching backgrounds from one session to another. To have the perfect match you need to use the same office. Secondly you have to shoot at the same time of the day – plus have the same sunny day! These problems never occur with a white background.
Making the person pop! Most profile photos are viewed at a small size. The advantage of a white background is the subject ‘pops’ off the background. White backgrounds alway look great on LinkedIn.
White never clashes. You can alway guarantee your profile photo will be featured on your company website. No matter what the brand colours of the website – a simple white backdrop will never clash.
